Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage visits Paphos Hamam

5th cultural heritage site to benefit from EU funded emergency measures

On 09 October 2013, the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, together with representatives of the United Nations Development Programme Partnership for the Future (UNDP-PFF), visited the Paphos Hamam, where European Union funded emergency measures are currently being implemented.

The Hamam, also known as the Medieval Turkish Bath was part of a larger complex built during the Medieval period and later modified and expanded during the Ottoman period. Today it presents the typical arrangement of an Ottoman bath-house comprising a disrobing room, a warm room, and a hot room.
The on-going emergency and protective works include removal of debris and vegetation, as well as restoration of the missing walls and vaults to reflect the original structure of the monument. During the site visit, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot members of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage were briefed on the on-going status of works. The project is due to be completed by November 2013.

The Paphos Hamam is the fifth cultural heritage site in the island to benefit from emergency measures, thanks to EU funds and UNDP-PFF support. We are very satisfied with the quality of the works done. When we started the project some months ago, the walls and domes presented different levels of deterioration. Today, as the works are on-going, the Hamam is already starting to re-gain its original appearance. This shows how much, small emergency measures can do to preserve and safeguard cultural heritage sites island-wide. All the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots should feel very proud of these results Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage.

Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot members of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage also paid a visit to the nearby Tombs of the Kings and Saint Neophytos Monastery. These visits show the interest of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage on all aspects of Cypriot heritage and their commitment towards guaranteeing its protection.
