PRESS Announcement - UNDP/PFF-215/13
SUSTAINING EFFORTS TO REVITALIZE BANDABULIYAS AND VILLAGES
IN THE NORTHERN PART OF CYPRUS
To celebrate the completion of the first “Bandabuliya Fund”, the European Commission and the United Nations Development Programme - Partnership for the Future (UNDP-PFF) in partnership with the Cyprus Community Media Centre (CCMC) are very pleased to invite you to the closing event “Bandabuliya Faces and Memories Exhibition” in the Bandabuliya (old market) of Nicosia on Thursday 28 February 2013, at 7pm.
The event will be the opportunity to present a photographic exhibition and digital stories, capturing people's memories of the Bandabuliya covered market of Nicosia. The Cyprus Community Media Centre initiative is one of ten cultural and community activities funded by the European Union and supported by UNDP Partnership for the Future which were carried out between September and December 2012 to support the revitalisation of the market.
Based on the successful experience of the "Bandabuliya fund", new EU funded and UNDP supported cultural activities will take place between March and August 2013 in the two Bandabuliya of Nicosia and Famagusta as well as in 11 villages in the northern part of Cyprus where upgrading projects had previously been realised. The new programme of activities includes innovative handicrafts workshops and seminars, theatre and music performances, photos and painting exhibitions, festivals and other environmental awareness projects.
The conclusion of the first round of activities at Bandabuliya and the start-up of the new ones in 11 villages in the northern part of Cyprus mark an important moment in the local communities’ efforts to unlock the economic and social potential of the renovated areas, community buildings and monuments.
All activities are funded by the European Union under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot Community and supported by the United Nations Development Programme – Partnership for the Future.
