New Exhibition Looks Back in Time at the daily life in Ermou Street
Opening on 28 June 2012 at the Home for Cooperation
Funded by the European Union and supported by UNDP-Partnership for the Future, the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research’s (AHDR) latest exhibition entitled “Nicosia: Topographies of Memory” takes viewers into a hidden part of Nicosia’s history. The exhibition, which opens on 28 June at the Home for Cooperation, peers behind the walls that now frame the buffer zone, to display a rich and rare portrait of what once was the main artery of the city, Ermou Street.
Topographies of Memory presents the research of Anita Bakshi, who sought to uncover the memories of Ermou Street, now enclosed within the buffer zone, and the areas around it, where all communities in Cyprus traded and shopped together. This area is an important resource, containing a wealth of information about the nature of coexistence and conflict between diverse communities in Cyprus.
This exhibition attempts to bring this information to light by virtually reconstructing the Ermou marketplace – using maps that were created from memories and narratives provided by shopkeepers who once worked or lived in this area. The exhibition reveals that memories are incomplete and oftentimes in conflict with each other, raising the question of how we may seek to grapple with complex and varied portrayals of the past.
An important part of that recovery process is to reclaim the shared history of the city, and in so doing, develop a collective vision and action for its shared future.
The exhibition and related activities (public talk and tour of Hans and markets) is organised within the scope of the EU funded and UNDP-PFF implemented projects for the revitalization of the walled city of Nicosia. It dovetails with the recent renovations of the Bandabuliya (Old Market) and the opening of the exhibition it encloses.
Topographies of Memory is taking place at the Home for Cooperation from 28 June to 30 September 2012. It is financed by the European Union, supported by the UNDP Partnership for the Future and hosted by the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR).
The Home for Cooperation (H4C) is located in Nicosia, opposite Ledra Palace Hotel in the UN Buffer Zone, and is open from 10.00 – 18.00, Monday to Saturday.
The opening of the exhibition will take place on 28 June at 19:00. A tour of Hans and markets in old Nicosia will start from the Home for Cooperation at 9:30 on Saturday 30 June 2012. A public discussion on the exhibition will be held on Thursday 5 July at 18.00.
