High level site visit to the construction site of the new bi-communal Nicosia Waste Water Treatment Plant

A high level site visit to the construction site of the New bi-communal Nicosia Waste Water Treatment Plant will take place on Thursday November 4th at 3.30 pm in the presence of the representatives of the two communities, Ms. Eleni Mavrou and Mr. Cemal Bulutogullari, and of the European Parliament High Level Contact Group for Relations with the Turkish Cypriot community in the northern part of Cyprus.

During the site visit, a short project presentation and short speeches will be delivered by the representatives of the two communities, the Coordinator of the Group, EP Vice President, Dr. Libor Rouček, and EC and UNDP officials. A symbolic action consisting of the planting of olive trees will follow.

The purpose of the visit is to witness first-hand the progress being made on the project and commend the efforts of this significant bi-communal venture.

The project is jointly financed by the Sewerage Board of Nicosia and the European Union and is being implemented by UNDP.

The first phase of the project, which started in March 2010, focused on the design of the new WWTP while the second phase, which is expected to be concluded by June 2012, involves the building of the treatment plant itself.

The new plant will be able to treat waste water from 270,000 residents of Cyprus and will be using state-of-the-art technologies in line with EU standards. It will process about 30,000 cubic meters of waste water a day, converting the energy content of the bio-solids into green electricity and organic fertilizers, hence contributing to the environmental sustainability of the project.

The works, which are worth 25 million EUR, are an important example of cooperation as the new bi-communal Nicosia WWTP is expected to be jointly managed by the two communities.

Cypriot media are invited to cover the event. Please contact UNDP Partnership for the Future at the following e-mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
