EU funded rehabilitation works to improve an old Nicosia market Print
PRESS Announcement - UNDP/PFF- 191/10

EU-funded rehabilitation works to improve an old Nicosia market start just opposite the
restored Bedestan monument

The UNDP Partnership for the Future Programme, under the EU-funded “Programme for the upgrading and rehabilitation of Old Nicosia” is pleased to announce a groundbreaking ceremony to be held on Wednesday September 29 at 4:00 pm to mark the commencements of the improvement works to the retailers’ area of the old market situated in the northern part of Nicosia.

Improvements to the retailers’ area will cover an estimated ground surface of 4,500 square meters and encompass the restoration and rehabilitation of 77 stalls. The project includes the upgrading of the existing structural conditions of the building as well as of its infrastructure, facilities, stalls, walkways, windows, doors and the entire roof.

The overall effort aims to enhance the organizational set up of the market as well as to upgrade the market appearance and its infrastructure in line with modern international standards.

Constructions works began on September 22, 2010 and fall under the umbrella of other EU-funded and UNDP-PFF managed projects aiming to support the revitalization of the Walled City of Nicosia and the conservation of its architectural heritage.

Due to its location, at the very mathematical centre of the old walled city and opposite to the recently restored with EU assistance Bedestan (St. Nicholas Church), it is expected that the rehabilitation of the old market will bring an added value to the neighbourhood and help promote the conservation of shared heritage.

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place at the market’s entrance. Cypriot media are invited to cover the event. Please contact UNDP Partnership for the Future at the e-mail below.
