EU FUNDING PROJECT REVEALS THE HISTORICAL RICHNESS OF
THE WALLED CITY OF FAMAGUSTA
The UNDP Partnership for the Future Programme, under the EU-funded “Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community”, is pleased to announce the completion of the project “Rehabilitation of the route between the Othello Tower and Arsenal Tower” in Famagusta.
This project contributes to the upgrading and revitalisation of the walled city of Famagusta. It involved the rehabilitation of open areas and the pedestrianisation of the route between Othello and Arsenal Tower in order to enhance the overall experience of visiting the Walled City. In detail, the rehabilitation project in Famagusta aims to live up to the present and future needs of the city by upgrading the pavement through widening and adding colourful elements, enhanced illumination for security measures and for evening time usage and placing of street furniture. The overall expenditure for the implementation of this project amounts to approximately 600,000 euros.
The rehabilitation project has aimed to produce the necessary preconditions in order for the historical and archaeological richness of the Walled City to be fully appreciated by its visitors. The inhabitants of Famagusta are as well encouraged to give new functions to the existing urban fabric thus preserving, revitalising and rehabilitating the cultural heritage for the admiration and enjoyment of all and maintaining a lively and living city.
A public event to mark the completion of the project will take place in Famagusta on 2 December, 2009 at 4 p.m.
