Students from a local community will go to school safely thanks to an EU-funded project

The UNDP Partnership for the Future Programme, under the EU-funded “Aid Programme for the
Turkish Cypriot community”, is pleased to announce the completion of works “Upgrading of Local
and Urban Infrastructure Phase II”, with the Improvement of the existing road and construction of
sidewalks for the town of Geçitkale/Lefkoniko located in the northern part of the island.

The completed project includes an upgrading of the infrastructure through the reconstruction of
drainage and improving paving and pedestrianisation of 360 meters of the road servicing as the
main entry and exit point between the town and the community school. The road has been
asphalted and the construction of sidewalks has been provided. In total, the project has received
EU funding worth approximately 118.000 euro.

The upgrading of the existing infrastructure will provide a safer environment and facilitate
students’ accessibility to school. The overall effort aims to enhance mobility and improve the
quality of life of the residents, pedestrians and students in the town.

“This completed project demonstrates the importance of rural development policy which the EU has
been promoting in the recent years in an effort to diversify the local economy and living conditions in
rural areas”, says Ms. Alessandra Viezzer from the European Commission.

The improvement of the local infrastructure of Geçitkale/Lefkoniko is one of several projects under
implementation by UNDP-PFF and funded by the EU in the field of infrastructure and urban

On Thursday, 15 October 2009 at 11:30 a.m., an inauguration ceremony will mark the completion of
