EU FUNDED PROJECT BRINGS BACK TRADITIONAL CHARM TO A CYPRIOT VILLAGE

The UNDP Partnership for the Future Programme, under the EU-funded “Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community”, is pleased to announce the completion of works for the urban and infrastructure upgrading of the village of Kalyvakia/Kalava
The recently completed project includes the revitalization of the original village square and its surroundings by paving of the square using local stone, and landscaping the mosque yard. Facades of selected traditional buildings around the square have also been partially restored. A previous phase of the project, completed and inaugurated on 5 June 2008, included the construction of a 3.2 km water pipeline conveying water from the source to the village reservoir. In total, the village has received EU funding worth approximately 170,000 euro.

The beautification and upgrading of the local infrastructure of Kalyvakia/Kalavaç is the first completed pilot project implemented by UNDP-PFF and funded by the EU. It is designed to encourage the rehabilitation of the architectural patterns of traditional villages using as much as possible traditional materials and techniques.

Mr. Ömer Meraklı, representing the residents of the village, in his thanks to the EU and the UNDP-PFF, says that “besides the marked improvement in the daily lives of the inhabitants, the completed project has raised significantly the profile of the village making it attractive to new visitors from Cyprus and abroad”.

Ms. Alessandra Viezzer of the European Commission, commenting on the completion of the works says that “community level projects such as the one in Kalyvakia/Kalavaç demonstrate best the added value EU funding can bring in improving the quality of life in rural areas in the northern part of Cyprus. She also stresses that strong local ownership is needed to achieve results. In this respect, the experience in this village is very encouraging”.

On Saturday 17 January 2009 at 11.00 am a ceremony taking place in the newly upgraded village square will mark the completion of the project.
