ORGANIC FARMING/FOOD SAFETY WEEK 2008

UNDP/PFF is organizing a series of activities within the framework of the Turkish-Cypriot Organic Farming and Food Safety week between 7 and 11 July 2008. UNDP/PFF, a programme funded by the European Union, has been active in both areas since 2004 building capacity and supporting Turkish Cypriot farmers and food operators to achieve important results such as organic farming certification, HACCP certification or ISO22000 certification. The Organic Farming/Food Safety Week 2008 includes a series of events focusing on these two areas. The events are open to interested farmers, food operators and members of the public who would like to know more about the topics covered. The program of the week is as follows:

Programme of the UNDP- PFF Organic Farming / Food Safety Week
Training Course on: “Organic Beekeeping”, Saray Hotel, Nicosia, 7-8 July 2008, 09:00 - 17:00
This course is targeted at beekeepers who would like to start organic production. All Turkish Cypriot beekeepers are encouraged to participate and find out more about organic beekeeping methods.
Award Ceremony & Olive oil competition, Folk Arts Foundation,Nicosia,11 July 2008,19:30-22:30
Successful Turkish Cypriot organic farmers will be awarded organic farming certificates for the year 2007. The award ceremony will be followed by a reception and a local olive oil tasting competition.
Basic Level Food Hygiene Course, Saray Hotel, Nicosia, 8 July 2008, 08:30 - 13:30
The Basic Level Food Hygiene Course is an informative and interactive course suitable for Nicosia food handlers with no previous formal training or food operators who would like to learn more about how to maintain appropriate hygiene in their premises.

Introduction to HACCP: All you need to know before you decide to implement it, Saray Hotel, Nicosia, 11 July 2008, 09:00 - 16:00
This seminar will explain the steps food operators need to take in order to satisfy EU legal requirements for the food industry. The seminar will include examples of how other food operators were able to implement HACCP according to their particular needs and risks.
Forum: Bringing the Turkish Cypriot food industry in line with EU acquis communautaire, Saray Hotel, 11 July 2008, 17:00 - 19:00
Representatives from the food industry will discuss the problems the industry is facing and what needs to be done in order to bring it in line with EU acquis communautaire. Caterers, food operators, food manufacturers, restaurateurs, food engineers and interested members of the public are encouraged to attend.
