Jointly organized by the Delegation of the European Commission to Cyprus and the UNDP/UNOPS Programme “Partnership for the Future (PFF)” a site visit by EU and Cypriot parliamentarians to the Omeriye area took place on 23 April 2003.
The parliamentarians, escorted by the EU Ambassador Mr. Adriaan van der Meer, the Mayor of Nicosia Mr. Michael Zampelas, the Nicosia Master Plan team leader Ms. Agni Petridou and the PFF Programme Manager Ms. Tiziana Zennaro, took stock of the current restoration works in Omeriye, being funded by the EU through UNDP and executed by UNOPS.
The Italian Minister of Culture, Mr. Giuliano Urbani, also attended the event.
“A beautiful masterpiece of Ottoman art brought back to its splendor” was one of the comments made by the parliamentarians during the visit at the Ottoman Baths located in the heart of Omeriye.
As stressed by Ms.Tiziana Zennaro during the presentation of the restoration works, “This is only one of the initiatives for the Rehabilitation of Old Nicosia being implemented by the EU funded PFF Programme”.
The Programme also includes, among other projects, the restoration of the northern wall of the Omeriye Mosque and landscaping of its gardens
PFF is strongly supporting the Nicosia Master Plan in its efforts to revitalise the Walled City of Nicosia and to sensitise Nicosia residents on the conservation of their architectural and cultural heritage.
It is expected that the works in the Omeriye area will be completed by July 2003.
