New Business Support Project for Cypriot SMEs
“Partnership for the Future”
The Launching Workshop of the EU funded Business Support Project – a component of the UNDP/UNOPS Programme “Partnership for the Future (PFF)” - took place on 13 May 2003 jointly organized with the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI).
Forty participants from sixteen Cypriot business support institutions attended the meeting. A delegation from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, headed by Mr. Andreas Petrondas, Director of Commerce, also participated.
Export potential for Cypriot goods and services vis-а-vis the European Union was one of the major issue discussed during the workshop. In introducing the Business Support Project, Mr. Giuseppe Belsito, UNDP/UNOPS Business Development Adviser, stressed that Cypriot SMEs are required to improve their competitiveness in order to grasp the market opportunities offered by the EU market
Targeted capacity-building activities for Cypriot SMEs to raise awareness on the EU Acquis Communautaire were some of the measures, under the business support project, announced by the EU Ambassador Mr. Adrian van der Meer in his opening remarks at the workshop.
In commenting this new initiative, developed in cooperation with the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Vassilis Rologis, CCCI chairman, underscored that one of the basic aims of the project is to bring closer the Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot business communities.
A grant scheme to assist Cypriot SMEs and business support institutions in gaining better access to international markets was also announced as part of the package provided by the business support project to the Cypriot business community.
