“Partnership for the Future”

A study on Competitiveness and Market Opportunities in the European Union for Products and Services originating from the Republic of Cyprus, released today by the EU funded UNDP/UNOPS Programme Partnership for the Future estimates that Cyprus could potentially export Ђ350 million of goods to the EU market and also identifies a number of services with a significant EU demand.

Some key sectors were highlighted in the study as having exceptionally high potential. These included fresh foods, processed foods (including beverages), textiles and garments, and some light manufacturing. In the area of services, besides significant potential in tourism, the study identifies opportunities for transportation, financial and communication services.

The study underscored that Cyprus’s accession to the EU will bring many benefits, such as foreign investment, joint ventures and trade opportunities, but will also give rise to new challenges such as enhancing competitiveness.

Based on the findings of the study, the EU funded UNDP-UNOPS Programme “Partnership for the Future” will design and implement a number of projects aimed at both assisting Cypriot SMEs in achieving better access to international markets and improving their competitiveness.
