Traditional Plasterng Techniques
for the Walled City of Nicosia

(Ledra Palace Hotel, UNDP/UNOPS PFF, 6-11 October 2003)

An initiative
of the

UNDP/UNOPS Programme

“Partnership for the Future”

funded by the European Union

Jointly organized with the Nicosia Master Plan (NMP) team, the EU funded UNDP/UNOPS Programme Partnership for the Future conducted a five day training seminar on traditional plastering techniques to be used in the Walled City of Nicosia. Fifty Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots attended the seminar. Mr. Franco Fogliata, an international expert with more than twenty years teaching experience in the use of traditional mortars/plasters in conservation, trained members of the NMP team and contractors working for the PFF restoration projects, on these techniques. Mr. Fogliata teaches at the European Centre for the Skills of Architectural Heritage Conservation in Venice.

The training seminar consisted of both classroom and hands-on sessions with participants learning the proper technique for mixing and applying the plaster that dries to a smooth marble-like finish.

Mr. Fogliata commented that: “This method of plastering ensures the proper renovation of monuments and buildings of historical and archaeological value, preserving the common cultural heritage of Cyprus for future generations.”

This seminar is only one of the several initiatives developed by the Partnership for the Future Programme to support the rehabilitation of the Walled City of Nicosia.
