Official inauguration of the Omeriye Bath and the EU funded projects in the Omeriye area
“Partnership for the Future”
funded by the European Union
“A beautiful masterpiece of Nicosia is brought back to its splendor.” This was one of the comments made by the EU Commissioner Michel Barnier at the inauguration of the restoration works of the Omeriye Bath and of the northern wall of the Omeriye Mosque and its garden, which took place on 23 October 2003.
“A number of important historical neighborhoods have already been renovated successfully with EU funds and many more interventions are under way.” was the comment by the EU Ambassador in Cyprus Mr. Adriaan van der Meer.
As stressed by Ms. Tiziana Zennaro, UNDP/UNOPS/PFF Programme Manager during the event: “This is one of the latest achievements of the EU funded UNDP/UNOPS Programme Partnership for the Future (PFF) for the revitalisation of Old Nicosia.”
The PFF is strongly supporting the Nicosia Master Plan in its efforts to revitalise the Walled City of Nicosia and to sensitise Nicosia residents on the conservation of their architectural and cultural heritage.
The inauguration saw the participation of Mr. Kalman Mizsei, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS, by the Hon. Minister of Interior Mr. Andreas Christou, the Hon. Minister of Education Mr. Pefkios Georgiades and the former Chief Negotiator and former President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. George Vassiliou.
The event was also attended by the Ambassadors of EU Member States, accession and candidate countries.
