Lapithos / Lapta: infrastructure upgrading

Background:

Known as “the city of treasure” during the Byzantine period, this is a small, picturesque village, located in the northern part of Cyprus. Rich in natural and architectonical resources, it is being more and more chosen by local and foreign tourists as their holiday destination, resulting in an increased local population that in summer time goes from 6.000 inhabitants to 18.000. The project aimed at supporting the town in implementing safety measures to face the rapid growth of the population and the consequent road safety problems coming from the extensive increase in the number of pedestrian traffic within the town.

The project:

The project aimed at improving the quality and safety of four main roads in the town, focusing in particular upon the needs of the most vulnerable road users (local and tourist pedestrians, and especially students on their way to and from school). New pedestrian pavements and sidewalks will be introduced in order to provide new safe travel routes.

Results:
  • Maximized road safety – as well as pedestrian security;
  • Improved physical environment in residential areas, as well as improved safety of the main roads.
